If you are involved in an accident, there are certain steps you need to take to protect yourself.

#1. Never give a statement to anyone other than as is required by law before you consult with an attorney.

#2. If you are physically able, obtain or have someone else obtain for you the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of witnesses to your accident.

#3. Be sure to contact your insurance company to notify it of your accident.

#4. If your accident only involves property damage and you are not hurt you can probably deal withthe other driver's insurance company (if they have insurance) or your own, and you may not need an attorney. However, it is always good advice to talk to an attorney because some injuries do not show up until later and the opposing insurance company is only looking out for its insured's best interest- not yours!

#5. If you are injured, a lawyer is needed. Injuries may cause you to miss work for a time, and lost wages and medical bills may pile up. You should document your injuries and the damages to your vehicle by taking photographs. It is also a good idea to keep a diary of your doctor visits, and how your life is being affected by the accident. An attorney can assist you and negotiate with the insurance company to secure the best compensation for you.
